Putting Tips From the PGA Tour’s Best Putter

On a recent Bryan Brother‘s video, the guys stopped in Louisiana to play golf with the PGA Tour’s number one putter: Sam Burns.

Known as Scottie Scheffler’s best friend on Tour and frequent practice partner, Burns routinely tops the yearly “strokes gained” putting as well as the best from within 10’ categories. His style is seen as athletic and uninhabited by a lot of indecision.

In the Bryan Brothers “Roadtrip” video with Burns, Wesley Bryan asks Burns how he’s gotten to be such a great putter.

I thought it would be great to list here, some of the things that he works on in his putting.

  • Use of a chalk line. To help him get his ball on the right start lines, Burns uses a chalk line to ensure that he’s getting the ball started on his correct line. When he can visually see that he is rolling the ball on that line, he feels more confident in his putting on the course. Burns often hits 50-100 putts using the chalk line before play.
  • Remain athletic. While he uses, AimPoint (a putting technique to help him read greens), Burns says he is not beholden to it. If he senses that the read is different from what he is gauging with AimPoint, he feels free to go with his gut. This allows him to not get too technical, but rely on his feel and athleticism.
  • Dead weight putting. Instead of focusing on creating (or perfecting) the perfect stroke, Burns relies on letting the putter swing itself to putt the ball. This is often referred to as “dead weight” putting. And, it allows you to let the putterhead swing itself with its own weight instead of trying to contrive the putting stroke with her arms / shoulders.
  • Picking a start line. Many of the better putters will visualize the ball falling into the hole. So, they’ll read the putt and then pick a part various sections of the putting line and where it may enter the hole. In Burns’ case, he is more focused on the 3-4″ in front of his ball – making sure that he gets the ball started on his starting line after reading the putt.

Here’s the clip of Burns talking about his putting routines. Hopefully it helps you improve your putting!
