Here’s a great video of Jack Nicklaus and Michael Bamberger discussing his last U.S. Open win – the 1980 Open at Baltusrol.
A few interesting tidbits from the video:
- Had the yips coming into the tournament – but had received a short game lesson from Phil Rodgers
- Missed the cut in the previous week’s tournament
- Jack states 1979 was his worst year as a professional (no wins)
- Mentions he started his swing with his hips first – “was a bad habit I had gotten into – but it helped me to get behind the ball”
- Jack celebrated the win with son Michael by going to McD’s
- Barbara’s (Jack’s wife) favorite golf photo of him is sinking the winning putt on 18
- Had the same grip on his 3-wood for 33 years(!)
- The USGA awarded any player $50k for beating the scoring record (both Jack and Aoki each collected the award)
